the jeweler offered Marie-Antoinette a 2842 carrat diamond necklace. She refused because France was already in debt. But the jewler, who had already made the necklace, couldn’t afford to not have someone buy it so the jewler cond the Cardinal de Rohan into buying the necklace they did this by having :
1) a prostitute pose as Marie Antoinette
2) forging letters to the Cardinal ‘from’ Marie Antoinette saying how much she wanted the necklace
After they did this the bill was sent to the French court where word got out that Marie Antoinette had apparently bought the necklace everyone was enraged that their queen had bought a necklace even though their country was in such debt. It didn’t help that the con artists had pawned all the diamonds. In the end they used this to condem Marie Antoinette.
